Blogging and Design: A Week With Design Bloggers |
November 27, 2011
When my friend told me about accidentally meeting Adi, a project manager in an organization bringing online taste-makers to Israel, I was curious but had very low expectations. When Adi contacted me and told me this time they’re arranging for a group of design bloggers to visit Israel as part as Kinetis’ Vibe Israel program, I thought it’s a great idea and promised to help. But only when I saw the list of bloggers I got really excited. They were Andrea Chin of Designboom, Amy Frearson from Dezeen, James Davidson of WeHeart, Jeff Hamada of Booooooom and Ben Faga, EIC of DeTnk. Yeah, I know.
Kinetis got some help from the Holon Design Museum contacting the bloggers and putting together a truly amazing (and packed!) schedule – filled to the brim with private tours of museums and galleries, meetings with up and coming designers and renowned designers and lots of great food (some of them could not stop talking about the shakshuka, which got me craving it, too!)
I was lucky enough to accompany them on their tour of the renovated Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Curator Mira Lapidot was our wonderful guide and be sure you’ll hear about this one more. We also visited the studio of designers Ototo and Peleg, where we all got to meet the crazy-talented shoe designer Kobi Levi. After that, architect Alon Ben-Nun, founder of the local Houses from Within, took us to visit artist (and ex ad man) Shony Rivnay’s downtown loft, architect Alex Meitlis all-white modern apartment and architect Amir Navon’s mod grey and yellow apartment. Later that weekend, just before an event in the bloggers’ honor with the local media, I got to interview everyone for GOstyle Magazine on their work, the trip to Israel and their 2012 design expectations (the issue will be out this Thursday, so if you read Hebrew I highly recommend it!).
Personally, what I enjoyed most about this week was the people I got to meet. Of course I’m referring first and foremost to Amy, Andrea, Jeff, Ben and James (with which, it turns out, I share a friend), but also Adi and Joanna from Kinetis and some local designers, artists and bloggers. I’ll admit that I schlepped my huge camera with me but barely used it because I found it hard to both take photos and be in the moment. I used my favorite app, Instagram, to capture my favorite moments and also share them on Twitter. The other photo is from my friend (remember her from the first paragraph?) Tifferet Liphshitz, and there are many more on her brand new Facebook page.
Moments: (From top left) Adi and Andrea in Alex Meitlis’ living room, a Fornasetti ashtray on burl-wood side table at Meitlis’, Anish Kapoor’s sculpture at the Israel Museum, the Archaeology wing in the museum, A look outside Meitlis’ terrace, Gilt frames on white, Group pic, Meitlis’ blue and white collection, Meitlis’ living room and bath, Hunter boots and felt chair in Amir Navon’s apartment, Rivnay’s “wine cellar” wine room and green bedroom, Kobi Levi’s shoes, Shony Rivnay.
Be sure to come back for more of the people, designs and thoughts from that week, and of course some un-related posts. Also, I’m working on the blogroll page for Rooms and Words, so if you have a design related blog you feel we should see, feel free to post it in the comment section or email us.
